BRUSHSTROKES AND GESTURES

My works are all about painting in nature. It engages all the senses.

Exciting, Emotional, Vibrant, Inspirational, Resilient, Peaceful and Calm.

Originally from Oatley NSW and still a member of Oatley 101 Art Society.

I have had may painting trips away with like-minded artists who now are dear friends.

I love painting "en plein air" (outdoors).

I moved to Smithtown on the Mid North Coast in 2024 and love it.

Fred Bullen has won awards for his works in local area exhibitions and many are currently displayed in galleries in Forster, Taree and Port Macquarie.

His most recent works have been described as having been executed “by an artist who has developed his own style based on an intuitive execution. The suburban landscape is rendered with an almost photographic naturalism; but the use of bright colours, ambiguous and distorted perspectives, and strange juxtapositions suggest an imagined or dreamed reality”.

His inspiration comes from the local area and the urban landscape which are then reproduced in traditional or one of many styles such as ‘abstract realism’.

Birds of a Feather Exhibition (18 May 2026)

This will be a ‘Pop Up’ exhibition OPEN to members and non-members and will be open to all mediums.

Painting, photography, sculpture etc. with the overall theme of BIRDS.

This exhibition will showcase the variety of local birds and the inspiration that they give us to create art (any kind of bird art will be accepted but local birds are encouraged).

$10 for 2 pieces where each piece is A5 (15cm x 10.5cm) size or smaller.
$10 for each piece up to 1.5m on its longest side.
$20 for each piece 1.5 m and larger.

We’ve increased the size to 300mm x 300mm
(30cm x 30cm) and the price limit to $300.

(We’ve found that this is a very popular sized canvas for both artist and customer).

The Tinies Exhibition is the Gallery’s annual small painting exhibition.

This year you can also opt for any unsold artworks to remain at the gallery to be exhibited in the gallery or in Lil’s Gift Shop throughout the year.

Criteria are:

Open to paid up Exhibiting Members of the Gallery (not a member -join here, its only $50 per annum to access at least 3 exhibitions a year). Join us
Price point to be below $300.
Maximum 300mm (30cm) on any side (you can add a minimal frame to this measurement if you like).
Entry fee per piece is only $5
Maximum of 8 entries per artist.
Option to leave your unsold pieces at the Gallery and we will show your work throughout the year when we have the opportunity.

Sculptures Rock! (13 Dec 2026)

The Gallery's annual Sculpture Prize will be held again in December this year, in conjunction with Macleay Valley Coast. It will be exhibited inside the Gallery and in the grounds of the Gallery and Maritime Precinct.

The heritage listed Maritime Precinct in South West Rocks includes the Gallery, which is housed in the Pilot House; the Maritime Museum; Visitor Information Centre; and the Arts & Crafts Cottage.

The Sculpture Prize 'Sculptures Rock!' will run for three weeks from Monday 14th December 2026 to Sunday 3th January 2027 in conjunction with the Gallery’s Summer Members’ Exhibition.

With a prize pool of $13,000, this is a fabulous opportunity to exhibit in one of the most beautiful locations on the Mid North Coast.

Each sculpture requires payment of a $25 entry fee. Youth (under-18) entries are free.

Prize categories

Large Outdoor prize(larger than 80cm in any direction) - $5000
Large Outdoor Highly Commended - $500
Small Prize (no larger than 80cm in any direction) - $5000
Small Highly Commended - $500
Youth Prize - TBA

All prizes are non-acquisitive

Adelaide Swift Memorial Art Awards Registration (14 Jun 2027)

Main Prize: $3000 - The Adelaide Swift—South West Rocks Rotary Club Award
All other categories have monetary awards, you can see the list here.

Deadline for registration is April 1st.

Deliver your artwork to the gallery between 3pm and 5pm on Sunday, April 13.
Size limit: Maximum 1 metre on any side. Limit of two artworks per category.

The artworks will be on display at The Gallery from April 14 to May 4.
